Every Rug Couture rug embodies the heritage of woven craft, the area where it was made and an understanding of the strengths of methods of production; hand tufting and hand knotting. We are both knowledgeable and passionate about the process of translating designs into woven form, as one of our founder members is a designer. We take great pride in helping our clients achieve their vision. Our master rug makers, with many generations of experience between them, combine traditional skills and processes with modern technology to bring you a superior quality rug that looks and feels fantastic. A rug which, will retain its natural lustre for years when looked after. You can be re-assured that no illegal child labour will ever be used in the making of your rug.

Our custom hand tufted rugs are our most popular rug as they provide a high quality, uniform look within a rapid timeframe (6 weeks). For this reason they are particularly suited to more time and budget sensitive projects. They are durable, easy to clean, can be made to any size and shape, in varying thicknesses and are available in pure wool and New Zealand wool, in any of our designs. We are also able to translate your own designs, in any of these materials and also offer art silk (rayon), pure silk, matka silk and mohair as single materials or as blends via our bespoke service. If you would like to commission your own design or discuss a bespoke order please contact us here.
how your hand tufted rug is made
A team of skilled rug makers fuse modern and traditional processes to create your hand tufted rug. Your chosen design is scaled and enlarged to create a ‘graph’ of your rug which is then printed onto canvas and stretched across a frame. Loops of dyed wool, art silk or silk are repeatedly punched through the canvas with a ‘tufting’ gun to create the design. A latex coating referred to as the ‘scrim’ is applied to the reverse, enabling the ‘tufts’ to be held in place, then a final protective natural cotton backing is applied. The top of the rug is sheared to create an even pile which is then hand carved to accentuate elements of the design for a superior finish.

Our hand knotted rugs are exceptionally durable and offer an unmatched lustre. More often thinner and denser than their hand tufted counterparts, they are now available in varying knot densities of up to 232,500 knots per m2; a true heirloom piece, in pure New Zealand wool directly from our online shop. We are also able to translate your own designs in New Zealand wool, art silk, pure silk, matka silk or mohair as single materials or blends; adding textural techniques like hand carving or loop cutting via our bespoke service. how your hand knotted rug is made
Hand knotting is the oldest method of making rugs and originated in Central Asia over two thousand years ago. Creating a hand knotted rug requires exceptional skill and is very time intensive as each knot is tied by hand into cotton threads wrapped around a vertical loom. No latex/backing is required as each strand of fibre has been securely tied. A hand knotted rug is akin to a woven piece of art which requires the extremely skilled craftsperson to use their experience and ability to bring your chosen design to life. There is a dialogue which exists between the weaver and the design which takes years to learn and thus brings with it a sense of unparalleled tradition and history. Due to the highly skilled and labour intensive nature of this process our hand knotted rugs take considerably longer to produce but we feel they are very much worth the wait.
